Baroness  Lee of Asheridge
Right Honorable

Doctor of Humane Letters  1973
Status: conferred

Member of the Mother of Parliaments, Life Peeress, stateswoman, author, champion of education in the liberal arts, she guided the creative planning for Great Britain's Open University. Born and reared in Scotland, she has inspired men and women at home and abroad with the same sense of dignity which has marked her own lifetime of pioneering efforts in an era of social change. Tenacious in the pursuit of her far-reaching vision of a more humane society, she has tempered the deliberations of ministers of state with the grace and humor born of her deep intuitive sympathy for her fellow man. Her sensitive and determined leadership in planning the Open University has enabled it to become an international model for making the traditional values of liberal higher education accessible to greater numbers of people. For her far-visioned and courageous leadership in serving others, we this day accord her grateful recognition by conferring upon her the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
